Abstract

This lecture examines whether an evangelical view of Scripture implies a specific interpretive method and a predetermined interpretive outcome, with particular attention to the interpretation of Romans 1:26–27. Taking the Seoul Statement as a point of departure, it analyzes three Swedish contributions within the evangelical tradition. The analysis demonstrates that a shared view of Scripture and a common method (historical, literary, and canonical) do not necessarily yield a uniform interpretive result. The lecture therefore problematizes the notion of a singular evangelical hermeneutic and argues for the need for interpretive openness within the framework of an evangelical view of Scripture, particularly in matters concerning same-sex relationships and ethics.
