Nya Lödöse existed between 1473 and 1624 and was located in the eastern part of present-day Gothenburg. Between 2022 and 2023, an area in the southernmost part of Nya Lödöse was excavated. As a contrast to the densely built-up northern part of the town, this area had fewer houses and contained several gardens. The area may at the same time have been a resource for the town’s food supply and a land reserve for future development. This text aims to present the excavated area and some thoughts about the possibilities and challenges that exist in the studies of the urban gardening. In addition to studies of the cultivated soil itself, this includes studies of how the land was divided and used.
