Abstract

In modern society we expect conple relationships to be based on love, preceded by a time of infatnation. This emotion is likely to be percepted as unique, at the same time it is part of our society's idea about love and conple relationship. This artide compares ideas of falling in love with personal experiences of falling in love. What do people mean by "falling in love"? Are there any differences between men and women's ideas of, and experiences from, falling in love? And, in that case, how does that inflnence the constitution of a heterosexnal relation of love? The artide is based on qnalitative interwievs with six women and five men. The analysis of the interwievs shows that the informants share a common ideal abont falling in love, but that their personal experiences are gender-specific. The moment the informants have tried to transform their ideal into everyday-life practice they have failed. The reason for this is that they have tried to transform a gender- neutral ideal in to a gender-divided reality.
