Abstract

The liigh appreciation of love in a monogamous relationship is the underlying theme in the lyrics of dance-band songs. Matrimony is depicted as desirable as well as durable, which may comfort the public in these times when the divorce rate is steadibly going np. By its thematic concentration on reconciliation in a relationship with divine proportions, the song lyrics often börder on religious dimensions. like religious vocal music, the lyrics often go straight into the big issues in life, yet refrain from problemizing anxiety and pain. From a strictly musical angle, there is also an affinity with the music of religious revivalism. Sexual innuendos are very sparse in these texts about love. Love in the world of dance-band song lyrics is sweet and romantic, which is in accordance with the ideals of comfort and security characterizing the genre. The texts reveal a distinctly segregated gender pattern entailing different roles and terms for women and men. Gender politics impose a traditional division of roles, where the man is active and the woman is passive. She is distinguished for her looks, lie for his actions and words. It is easy to stop at the observation that dance band song lyrics transmit and further consolidate antiquated and stereotype sex roles. However, tliey may also indicate the these roles are actually cracking up and are being called in question. The popularity of the genre may be due to the public's wish to defend and preserve the old order.
