Women still work part time in a much larger extent than men in Sweden and other European countries. The article describes worker’s experiences of the will of municipalities to introduce full-time work as a norm in care. In a society where the individual is considered to be able to fully choose her living conditions, choosing to work part-time or full-time becomes part of manifesting ideas of free individuals. Intentions to increase full time work may be good, such as achieving increased gender equality, but in repeating ideas about the individual’s free choice, there is a high risk that traditional gender patterns will continue to be normalized instead of the conditions for choosing to be questioned.
