Abstract

When reading my grandmother’s diary, written 1918–1920, I became acquainted with her as a person whom I never knew. In the familyfolklore, she is described as a rather passive woman, subordinated to her husband. In her diaries we meet a young woman, who had spent some time in Berlin, lost her fiancé in World War I, returned to Sweden and fallen in love with a young student of law in Uppsala. Her text describes the everyday life, but also her thoughts about having a sexlife or not with her boyfriend. She is here an active part and does not wait until she is married, although she risks getting pregnant. By reading the diary, the notion of my passive grandmother totally faded away.
