The purpose of this article is to give an example of how you can work with sounds in the cultural fields of research. The experience of fieldwork in Istanbul is presented with a number of applicable, cultural perspectives. Definitions like soundwalk and soundscape are presented.
During a soundwal you listen to the acoustic environment as well as the culturally fascinating sounds. What influence does sound have on a person's everyday life and in what way does sound create meaning? Memories of sound, which you can refer to and thoughts that you can have at your disposal in your coming composition as well as reflections of socially censored sounds and sounds as symbols of assurance, are an important and interesting part of the research. There are unwritten rules of how to act, if you are supposed to be heard or silent.
Sound has an important significance in the urban environment and in today's metropolitan areas. Sounddesign has quickly become a way of creating a sort of image, a feeling, an idea and help for the individual to feel confident in the physical environment. The rhythm of the city indicates a sort of constant movement and the city sounds are always variable following a tempo without pause. The article emphasizes how a diversified empiricism of soundcultures and a mapping of the city soundscape, can create exciting insights within the cultural research.
