In the suburban setting discussed in this paper, teenagers representing a national majority turn out to be a local minority, surrounded by peers identified by various kinds of ethnic labels. Under such circumstances, the relative meaning of gender, sexuality, ethnic/national background, class, religious affinity and residential area, has to be continuously negotiated. The girls involved in the study can adopt a wide range of attitudes. Sometimes, they isolate in narrowly defined groups; in other cases, they attempt to abolish differences.
