Abstract

In this paper I focus on the efforts of people to give life meaning after forced emigration or hiding during the Holocaust, or death of loved ones in the attacks on the World Trade Center. Could simple material objects be of importance in the process of adjusting to tragedy or a new situation? The experiences of survivors of the Holocaust or émigrés, and those of relatives to 9/11 victims are not commensurable. However, I think a case may be made for a smiliarity in the way victims of both tragedies use personal objects to go on with their lives.

Författarbiografi

Margrit Wettstein, Uppsala universitet

Margrit Wettstein är doktorand i etnologi vid institutionen för kulturantropologi och etnologi, Uppsala universitet och är även verksam vid Nobelmuseet i Stockholm. Hennes forskning sträcker sig från Nobelpristagare på flykt undan Förintelsen till överlevande eller anhöriga till omkomna vid 9/11. Hennes arbetssätt är pragmatiskt med inspiration från både fenomenologi och psykoanalys och doktorsavhandlingen handlar om föremåls betydelse för människor som har hamnat i extrema livssituationer.
