The starting points in this article are the cultural valuable area around lake Brunnsviken close to central Stockholm and an environmental group that tries to defend it against exploitation. In interviews members of the group describe and explain the various importances the former royal parks in the area have to them. The interviews are then analysed in relation to different theories on the concept of place. I state that the informants have developed very strong and deep ties to the Brunnsviken-area and that it has become a part of their homes. Especially the unique history of the area has constributed to their strong feeling for the place. They also have a pronounced care for it.
In the end of the article I put forward some explanations to how commitment to a place can lead to environmental activism. I here argue that one reason often is a lack of political alternatives within the local parliamentary system. Another important thing is the existence of committed persons.
