The object of this article is to discuss how information and communication technology (ICT) is used in local music practices. Further, I will also investigate its role in the process of globalization, which the scene of rock music as a whole is undergoing today. Both the significance of new technique in the production of music, as well as the significance of new technique as means of communication between participants on the scene of rock music, is illustrated with examples from the rock scene in Umeå (north of Sweden) during the 1990's. Special attention will be drawn to the central role of the use of ICT in aesthetic expression. The way in which ICT facilitates global subcultures in so-called "virtual communities" is also illustrated. Meetings and actions through ICT become an integrated part of the practices involved in musical expression. In this way the abstract concept of cultural globalization becomes embodied in different forms of human action.
