This paper presents some preliminary ideas that are part of an ongoing project on changes in popular moral reasoning in Norway in this century. The empirical material consists of 630 life stories written by "ordinary people" and elicted by means of the nation-wide competition "Write Your Life" in 1988/89. The project focuses in particular upon changing moral notions, and on how different ways of defining self and society and the articulation between them involve different kinds of moral dilemmas.
