Presenting a few brief ethnographic touch-downs in the translocal field of reggae's artists and entrepreneurs, the paper addresses the global impact of the music and one of its main characteristics, its informal networks. Discussing the representation of reggae, both by the record industry and within the academic community, it is suggested, in conclusion, that the continuing exoticisation or the music may be viewed as an instance of orientalism.
