Abstract

Collecting stuff is often seen as a postive and normal thing to do, unless the collecting and the collections affect lives negatively. If a collector’s family and friends understand the collections as unnecessary or even garbarge, or if collecting is seen as interfering with the collector’s life, the idea of collecting is transferred to a grey area, and interpreted more as a negative and even pathological activity. Collecting mania is now a diagnosis, and a number of TV companies broadcast programmes on hoarding. This study discusses different kinds of collecting, and one kind is presented in the TV series Hoarding. Buried Alive. The main focus is within the grey area of collecting, where negotiations on normality and pathology are taking place.
