Abstract

This article discusses place, identity and migration, using two women's stories as example. Anna from Sweden is living in Brussels, Belgium and Fatima from Dubai is living in Malmö, Sweden. They have been moving to their respective new environments under different circumstances and for different reasons. Anna from Sweden have moved to Brussels out of curiosity and good working possibilities in the EU-parliament, and Fatima has come as a refugee to Malmö from Dubai. She is living in the suburb of Rosengård, an area with bad reputation. The purpose of the article is to discuss the relation between place and identity, and how places become "negotiation partners" in identity processes. The women have different possibilities to make these negotiations, but it is interesting to also see the similarities between their thoughts and actions in their respective environments. The article discusses the concept of place and space as well as identity, but also refers to Zygmunt Bauman's critical discussion on globalisation as well as it discusses cosmopolitan visions of the future. The women have different possibilities to visualise themselves not only in their respective local context but also in Europe and the rest of the world.
