Abstract

The last years the number of biotechnological companies have increased. Biology has become a valuable raw material that can be refined into medical and commercial products. My article is focusing on the links between our dreams of a healthy body, and the development of the biotech- and pharmaceutical industry. The human dreams about the body are illustrated with three comprehensive perspectives. First, it deals with the question that the body today is described in biological deterministic terms — we are our genes. Second, there exists a cultural awareness about the possibilities of genetechnology — we can change our genetic selves by for example removing hereditary diseases. Third, this interplay between the determinism of genetics and the potential of biomedicine makes demands on the pharmaceutical industry.
