This article is based on empirical materials from a recently initiated study of women-only sports races/events, so-called tjejlopp, in Sweden. In the article, the discourse theoretical concepts constitutive outside and articulation (Laclau & Mouffe 1985), are used to discuss the meanings and consequences of the tjejlopp phenomenon, and the ”tjej” (girl) as a subject position in exercise sport in general. The social and political consequences of the various articulations related to the women-only races are discussed. In addition, the article adresses issues of methodology and reflexivity and how ethnological and discourse theoretical approaches can be combined in order to strengthen and develop both scientific traditions.
