Starting in an ethnographic description of a classroom situation, this article deals with questions concerning power, violence, and gender. It is important not to use overly simplistic or determinative concepts when analyzing asymmetrical power-relations of the kind discussed. At the same time, however, it is just as important to be aware of the overall structures which always inform human interaction and the violence so often attached to it.
