Author Instructions

Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap welcomes previously unpublished scholarly articles from all disciplines within the field of literary studies. Interdisciplinary articles that in some way relate to literary material or questions in literary studies are also accepted. Manuscripts may be submitted in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, or English. The editorial team does not assume responsibility for unsolicited material.

Only commissioned essays and reviews are accepted.

Guidelines for authors

General guidelines for article formatting

To facilitate the work of editors and reviewers, as well as the conversion to other formats prior to publication, authors are encouraged to download and use our Word template, which includes predefined styles for titles, block quotations, endnotes, and more. The template is available in two formats:

• DOCX version: A standard Word file in which you can begin writing or into which you can paste your text.
• DOTX version: A template file that can be added to your personal template library.

When the typographical form of a cited source carries meaning, it is appropriate to reproduce the original as closely as possible, for example through spacing and line breaks. This should be done using the “block quotation” format.

In the main text, titles of books, journals, newspapers, and films should be italicized. Titles of articles or chapters should be placed within quotation marks. En dashes (not hyphens) should be used for page ranges and date spans. Quotations in languages other than Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, or English must be translated; the original should be provided in a note.

Length

The length (including spaces; excluding references) should be approximately:

• 40,000 characters for articles
• 20,000 characters for essays
• 15,000 characters for reviews

Author bio, abstract, and keywords

Each article should be accompanied by a separate document containing:

• an English title and abstract (200–300 words)
• keywords in English
• an author bio in Swedish (including title/position, field of research, and any other relevant information) 

Images

Any images, tables, or figures should be submitted on a separate sheet and in digital format. Image resolution must be at least 300 dpi. Indicate in the text where they should be placed. Authors are responsible for securing the rights for open access publication of any images and for ensuring that no conflicts arise between open access licensing (Creative Commons CC BY 4.0) and copyright.

References

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Note: As of 2023, authors are required to include a separate bibliography listing the works cited in submitted research articles. This enables the editorial team to process references in a way that allows TfL to contribute to open access scholarly citation data, in line with the “Initiative for Open Citations” (https://i4oc.org/). For the time being, however, this does not affect the formatting of references in the notes, where the instructions below still apply.

The bibliography should be submitted as a separate file and formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style, Notes and Bibliography system (see examples below).

References should be formatted as endnotes, following the Chicago Manual of Style Notes and Bibliography system adapted to Swedish conventions (see examples below). References must be sufficiently detailed so that readers do not need to consult a separate bibliography to identify the specific work and edition cited. When a full reference is given, it must always include a DOI (Digital Object Identifier), where available. The DOI should be provided as a clickable URL (see examples below) and placed at the end of the reference. If you are unsure of an article’s DOI, you can search for it at crossref.org using the “Search metadata” option.

Publication Fees

TfL does not charge any fees to authors.

Authorship Criteria

Each author (and any co-authors) must meet the following criteria:

• They must have made a substantial contribution to the design of the study, the collection of data, or the analysis and interpretation of data;
• They must, either by drafting the manuscript or by contributing to its revision, have made a significant contribution to its intellectual content;
• They must have approved the submitted manuscript.

Each author must be able to take responsibility for a part of the article’s content and be able to identify which co-authors are responsible for the remaining parts.
