Discover, communicate, and justify: The values and conditions of conversation-based assessment
In the field of literature, there is a long tradition of valuing literature through discussion, conversation, and negotiations. In the article, I argue that conversation-based quality assessment has three dimensions: it involves discovering quality, conveying quality to others, and justifying quality. Focusing on these three elements, the article contributes to an understanding of the conversation-based assessment as formed by being both a practical and an aesthetic community, where context and purpose of the assessment are essential factors in the evaluation. By emphasizing the communication (dimension) in an assessment process, the article also expands on Henrik Fürst's pragmatic reasoning about quality evaluation as dependent on discovery and justification. Communication is, in the article, understood as the verbalization of the experience, whether it is of an aesthetic or more practical nature, and thus as a mediator between the subjective and objective perspectives. The empirical data is partly drawn from the Danish and Swedish broadcasting novel prize juries and partly from professional discussions of literary quality in Norway.
