Abstract

Down-to-Earth Connections. On Transtextuality and Regionalistic Modernism in Tage Aurell’s Short Story ”Sommarspel”

This article uses Gérard Genette’s theories on transtextuality in an attempt to explore the meaning of Tage Aurell’s (1895–1976) ”Sommarspel” (”Summer Game”) from the short story collection Nya berättelser (New Stories) of 1949. The article analyzes the relations between this short story and earlier texts, such as the biblical myths of David and Goliath and David and Bathsheba, a poem by Dan Andersson, and an excerpt from the operetta Sköna Helena (La belle Hélène) by Offenbach. All of these relations highlight the strong relationship between ”Sommarspel” and the Swedish rural community of the early 1900’s. This relationship is so closely tied to Aurell’s authorship that it must be considered in order to understand the peculiar mix of regionalism and experimental modernism which constitutes Aurell’s short stories.
